Speech therapy for children and adults
PhDr. Monika Šulistová
I am a speech therapist with training in the diagnosis and treatment of speech and language disorders. I hold a Master Degree and State Diploma this field, as well as a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the Czech Speech – Languague – Hearing Association.
Speech disorders refer to a a variety of speech, voice and language difficulties.
I work with children who are:
- Unable to make speech sounds or cannot make them correctly
- Children who stutter
- Have fluency or rhythm problems
- Have difficulty understanding or putting words together to communicate ideas inapporopriate pitch, harsh voice and speech duality problems
Articulation disorders
Articulation disorders involve difficulties in producing sounds within syllables or mispronouncing words to the extent that others cannot understand what is being said.
Language disorders
Language disorders can be either receptive or expressive. Receptive disorders refer to difficulties in understanding or processing language. Expressive disorders include difficulty putting words together, having a limited vocabulary, or being unable to use language in a socially appropriate way.“
Fluency disorders
Fluency disorders include stuttering, a condition in which the flow of speech is interrupted by abnormal stoppages, repetitions (e.g., st–st–stuttering), or prolonged sounds and syllables (e.g., sssssssstuttering).
Resonance and voice disorders
Resonance and voice disorders include problems with the pitch, volume, or quality of a child’s voice that distract from what is being said. These types of disorders may also cause pain or discomfort for the child when speaking.
Multidisciplinary Approach
Speech disorders are often linked to other conditions — phonological, neurological, psychological, or physical. That’s why I work as part of a multidisciplinary team, alongside other healthcare specialists. Collaboration is key to effective treatment.
Counselling & Family Support
A crucial part of my work as a speech therapist is counselling — supporting individuals and families in understanding speech disorders and coping with the associated stress.
I begin by reviewing the child’s developmental and medical history. I speak with family members and, if needed, consult with physicians about any significant conditions.
Collaboration with the Family
When working with young children, family involvement is essential. Speech and language therapy is most effective when it includes parents or caregivers in the process.
When to Start Therapy?
The earlier, the better.
Children who begin therapy at ages 3–4 usually achieve better outcomes than those who start later.
That said — older children can make great progress too! It just might take longer because they’ve developed habits and speech patterns that need to be unlearned.
Therapy Methods
Speech–language therapy includes a range of tailored techniques:
Language Intervention Activities
Interactive exercises such as playing and talking with the child. I use pictures, books, objects, or real-life events to stimulate language development and strengthen communication skills.
Oral–Motor Activities & Articulation Therapy
These activities focus on improving the coordination of the mouth muscles and sound production. This includes:
- Physically showing the child how to produce certain sounds
- Demonstrating correct tongue placement and movement
- Encouraging repetition and practice during structured speech tasks
Home Practice & Parental Involvement
An essential part of therapy is building a personalized home program. Parents play a huge role in the success of their child’s progress.
Children who make the fastest and most lasting improvements are those whose parents are actively involved in applying strategies at home.
Consistency is everything. Home practice ensures the new skills are reinforced and carried over into daily life.
